Dance
It took a while to get ready, said the empty hairspray bottles and blush left on the counter;
Stressful too, said the looks of despair still reflecting in the mirror.
They were excited, said the random mumbling coming from their mouths;
Nervous too, said the sweaty handprints left on his pants and her dress.
Dinner was good, said the empty plates left on the table;
Romantic too, said the burning remains of multiple candles.
There was lots of friends, said the gallons of sparkles sitting on the car seats;
Pictures too, said the smiling faces left in the cameras.
The dance was tiring, said the empty silence during the car ride home;
Memorable too, said the butterflies still flying around in both of their stomachs.
This poem was written about a school dance and how both people felt before, during, and after the dance. The characters are two people who really like each other and are hoping that maybe something that has to do with a relationship can come out of this dance.
When I was writing this poem, I used objects to describe how the characters are feeling. I personally think that if you can't describe the way you are feeling with words, there is always a way to describe it using objects, feelings, or anything else you can think of. The objects also make the poem seem more realistic and it tells you what the characters did without them just coming out and saying it.
My favorite line in my poem was "There was lots of friends, said the gallons of sparkles sitting on the car seats." It used description of how the vehicle actually looked when the dance was over and described that there really were a ton of friends. How else would you get "gallons of sparkles" left in your car?
